Interview with CRE LAW 1 (2010)

I first saw CRE Law 1 tags not in Philly, but in Wilmington, DE around West Center City. I remember at 14 years old I was walking to the sneaker store on S. Market St. and noticed these dust tags on every window with this upper case CR then a lowercase stylish E. I knew the tag I saw was not from Wilmington, but I couldn’t place the handstyle as a Philly print at first. I just remember thinking, “I’m a flip my style like that!” I continued to see the dust tags all over West Center City until one day they stopped. I didn’t learn until a couple years later that CRE LAW 1 was known by more people than a skinny 14 yo kid copping sneakers in town.

CRE is currently incarcerated in a state prison in Pennsylvania, a victim of the street lifestyle, he will be home one day but not soon. The following interview was conducted by V. Ercolono who is currently down as well. Enjoy.

Where you from?

I’m from North Philly. Lehigh Ave.

What year did you start bombing?

I started tagging in 1979.

Who did you roll with at that time?

I liked writing alone, but I am affiliated with a number of crews such as LAW 1, IMC, WCS, OMT and HMK.

What got you into graffiti?

I got into graffiti at a very young age. I always peeped the walls back in the early 70s before I wrote. Then I visited NYC in 76’ & 78’ when they was rocking whole cars! That’s when I got hooked. I idolized the Kings like Lee, Futura 2000, Zephyr, Stay High 149, Taki 183, Iz Da Wiz, Smith, Pink, Skeme, Stasher, Crash.

How do you feel about graffiti today as opposed to when you started?

Today I think the best is da legal shit because it doesn’t get buffed. Philadelphia is the worst for tagging because soon as you get up your shit is buffed the next day. But the legals are more artistic. Even though I tagged my love has always been for pieces. Characters, wildstyles and the new shit can’t really be done illegally. The back in the day shit was alost more fun because there were battles and everybody that had any heart wrote graffiti, but they had HANDS. Back in the day if you didn’t have a hand you got dissed or exed out Now niggas just write some shit all over and think they the shit. No Hand, No Originality, using other people’s names. It aint like back in the day. Niggas aint perfecting nothing but dick eatin’. It’s very few real graff heads out in Phila now. But I love those that are doing it to death.

How do you feel about the newer generation of writers?

Like I said it’s a bunch of dick riding going on. Ain’t too many out there catching wreck everywhere alone for the true love of the game. It’s no originality. I’m not talking about those that are which are a few simply because Phila is a buff city now. Ain’t nobody perfecting hands no more because there are very few writers out getting it in compared to back when there was no Anti-Graffiti. Most real mothafuckas are part timing on legals or hustling dope. To the me the graff game in Philly is over. Only legals last today.

Who was killing shit when you started?

When I started it was my club, Presidents hay day. Razz and Estro. But you had others I loved too. Niggas like, Rara, Karaz, Breeze, Tank, Case, MB, Zuco, Sonic, Donk, Sub, Emerge, Doze, Darn, Bixby, Brask, SA of the 48’s, Satan, SB, Cat, KRStar, Tan, PB and Omen. Aw man it was so many out there it was crazy. Shit it got to a point where there was hardly no room on walls and if you went over someone it was about your ass! But the 70’s and early 80’s was the best in the 215. The 80’s breed was rocking a lot of the new styles compared to the wickeds and broad ways. A couple of piecers came out like MB, Espo, Met, etc..

What writers of the newer generation do you feel put in work?

I like some of the new dudes like Jesc. He’s a beast. I like him because he focused on graff not being the shit. That’s how I came up. It wasn’t about getting props it was about getting up, period. That was it.

I like graffiti true to the heart mothafuckas like Planet Rock, Kadism, Tone, BE, Soner, Pero, Seyce, Drama, but I’m more on the pieces. I like a lot of the European shit like the FX Crew, NASA, any original piecers like Giant, Espo, Ces, Pose II. It’s a lot more, but I’ve been down a while.

How do you feel seeing dudes you bombed with 20 yrs ago still getting up to this day?

It’s very few dudes from 20 yrs ago that still get up and they only do it to shake the dust of their balls. Like Razz, RX, Disco Duck, California Mike, MB, but I love to see new shit from the dinosaurs. It doesn’t surprise me because I’m 43 and still don’t have any real plans to quit. I don’t hate on people that quit or fall off. My focus is on my love for graffiti. Real graff heads don’t really quit. I think they take long vacations to take care of their kids, homes, jobs, only to go back on tour like an old rap group.

I know you know JS (Jonski) and he was one of the pioneers that bombed in Philly in the 80’s. How do you feel that he switched to the other side and stared working for Anti-Graffiti?

When JS crossed over like a number of writers did, I couldn’t and don’t understand it. But for real I talked to Johnski on numerous occasions and he was on repentance stuff. “I did bad, now I’ve got to make it right” type shit. But I’ve seen new shit on the low like bus scratches. JS pen and marker tags on phone booths. For me, Fuck ANTI, I love graff way too much to be totally against it. I could see if they promoted legal graffiti walls but they don’t even want that. I’ve known them to buff legals which I’m too old school for that.

How do you feel about people going over each other?

Man going over someone shit is disrespectful, PERIOD. It don’t got to be my shit. I hate that. Especially today Philly walls are clean as hell and then for someone to go over another person? I’m old school, that’s a motherfucker fight for real. I think if you go over someone then make a whole wall piece. Something that person is going to see and be like, “Damn!” not no “Fuck You!” shit.

Do you plan on making a comeaback because when people think Cre, they think Cre8 ESC?

I’ll be on parole so I’ll do a little here and there shit like always, but I’m mostly focused on coming out with a piece crew like OMT. But more organic like TATs crew out of NY, that’s my dream to have a graff competition. I love it way too much to let it slip through my fingers without letting people know my full potential. I’ll always be the original CRE. That fucking clown writing that 8 shit is a follower. When he first came out I was going through some personal shit like drugs and hustling, boosting you know survival shit. I didn’t focus on him too much because he had to have other people write his name. Pussy can’t piece, wicked and he’ll die off like the other CRE. He don’t have 30 years in him. He ain’t true to the game. He saw one of his friends write and he didn’t want to be left out. How he got in ESC is beyond me? Oh I guess he got a mean hand game cause the pussy ain’t a writer. He broke one of the oaths when he wrote CRE which a lot of new dudes don’t know about. I’m going to refresh that motherfuckers memory soon as I meet him.

Last words?

I just like to let people know that there are real graff heads and then there are dick riders that want to be real graff heads. This is how you know which ones you are… If it takes someone to take you out in the wee hours to catch wreck, you are a dick rider. Real graff heads have graff pumping through their veins 24/7. They perfect their hands. They live their name. It ain’t a fad. It ain’t a cool thing to us. It’s our life through and through. Graffiti is like my first love that molded me for the rest of them to come. It holds a permanent place in my heart.

He fought for civil rights in Alabama and nationwide along side of Martin Luther King. His approach was slightly more confrontational and he earned the name "Bomb-Proof" after surviving multiple attempts on his life. The Hilltop House - Washington D.C. (Apartment Review)

When I lived in Washington DC I searched for an apartment in the Columbia Heights area that was moderately priced and close to where I needed to be. With little time left in my search I came across the Hilltop House caddy corner from Meridian Park. When I met the building manager everything seemed great, she assured me there was no noise in the building, the pest problem was treated and manageable and she would be available whenever we needed her. Well...okay. And those of you that know me or just read this blog probably know I don't come from a pristine environment, but when I'm paying four times what my current car payment is, I'd like to live in peace. Where do I start?

#1 - The Window. We used to have a few guys that would come hang outside directly next to our window, smoking weed and drinking, pissing outside our window, yelling about how they keep it real..etc. Which is semi-fine other than I had a girlfriend that while I was out I did not feel safe having there by herself. So I told the building manager she needed to take care of it. Did she ever say anything? Does it matter because they came right back. Solution: lock the fucking gate so they can't walk back in the cut. Problem solved.

#2 - The doors. When we moved in I tested the doors outside the apartment because we were in a special hallway where no other apartments were located. Before we moved in I told her if the doors were loud that we were not interested in the apartment. She assured me they were not. Well when a door shut the reverberation was so loud that it shook our apartment door. Imagine this happening at least 15 times a day until Arthur calls it quits for the work day. Solution: Put some rubber stoppers on those heavy steel doors or add a hinge that allows the doors to close slowly. Problem solved.

#3 - The roaches. Want to know the extent of the problem? One night while we laid talking in bed a roach came running up from the foot of the bed directly at our faces. The roach was declaring war to take back its territory. Fuck.

#4 - The bums. My girlfriend went to take the trash out and came running back in the apartment because some guy smoking cigarettes approached her in the hallway OF OUR FUCKING BUILDING asking for some money. I went outside the apartment and told him to step. He replies in a threatening manner, "peace and respect, i dont want to rob or kill you, if you just give me some money." I told him whatever he wants to do and he's about to get fucked up. As we make our way into the lobby, guess who appears to my right? The building manager. She asks is there a problem? Of course there's a problem! There's a fucking bum in the lobby about to get stomped out. Open your eyes you nut. I'm still pissed about that day.

b) Another late night coming back from Pizza Hut we walked into our hallway and we saw two sets of eyes glaring out of the closet closest to our apartment door. I told my girl to run into the apartment and we got into the door and locked it. We both then looked out the peephole and saw a man and a woman coming out of the door picking up dropped drugs and their dropped pants. Okay so homeless drug addicts were looking for a place to get fucked. Cool. But not here. So after the hobo woman ran out of the hallway, the man soon followed. I saw this as my opportunity to strike. I picked up a baton and darted into the hallway after him. As he and I entered the lobby he turned to me and started to apologize. He explained that he was looking for somewhere to get with his woman and do a little heroin. He said he wouldnt use this building again. I felt bad for him and I told him I didn't care if he used this building again, just never set foot in that hallway. And we agreed like men that he could do whatever he wanted with his girl and his drugs anywhere in the building, but not around where I stay.

#5 - The flood. Before we moved out a flood hit our bedroom area. It ruined part of the bed frame, our sneakers on the floor. Shit happens but it'd be nice to know where the water came from because it smelled like piss.

#6 - The walls. Tapping on the walls for a few months every morning bright and early. Great way to spend your day off with unexplainable hammering on your walls that your building manager can't help you with.

Other than that everything was fine. I'm sure some people have had decent experiences at the Hilltop House, but this is my story. Go around the corner and find a place equally priced with none of the same inconveniences. The next apartment I stayed at on the same block around the corner was perfect.

Joe Budden Live at Island Reef Bar and Grille - North Philly

The weekend started with a lot of money being tossed around blackjack tables in Atlantic City and ended with a quick tour through North to see who was up. And that person would be BAM WCS. While in the neighborhood I went up Ridge Ave to check out Joe Budden at the Island Reef Bar and Grille. I was surprised by the number of kids who made the trek deep into the heart of the hood to attend this show. I'd say at least 65-70% of the kids in the spot were from South/Central Jersey. I had the most annoying motherfuckers shouting behind me the whole time, I mean the absolute worst people ever. One of them got on stage and did the Joe Budden lyrics challenge. Of course he nailed it..nut. Anyway through mic problems, padded stages, speakers catching fire and all that..Joe rocked and came through. Video below.

I met Eric in the early/mid 90s when I came walking into the front doors of High School. He came up to me immediately because he recognized me from around and introduced himself. Eric went through a lot of phases, mohawk punk to party club drug dealer and eventually to a train hopper with an ill drug addiction. He was the nicest dude ever and would always strike up a convo and keep it real, but in the last 3 times I saw him things started getting odd. Forgive me, but I'm going to speak the truth.

#1 After being arrested for trafficking, Eric was in the Navy for 5 months? I remember him wearing Navy outfits around Newark for like a year straight.

#2 We met up on Main St. and he was with some younger kids. He started telling them about how long he's known me and that I was his man. I said yeah Eric you know I got you. He then struck up a convo about how he used to see me drunk. I don't drink. He then told me we were boys and he would put blood on it, he slashed his arm so deep he needed stitches to stop the bleeding.

#3 He told everybody he was being held hostage by a dealer and needed to give him money before something bad went down. So he took money out a friends shop to cover "his debt"

When he died a few friends came out to his rescue because no family came forward to pay the funeral home to claim his body. Even with all the dudes Eric know/knew we were all broke, nobody had any money to help out. It was a fucked up situation and I felt bad that I didn't have anything to give Kevin who was collecting cash.

I wish Eric was still around to straighten out his issues. I've watched drugs fuck up my family and close friend's lives. No need to ask me why I don't fuck with drugs. Rest In Power.

Daryl Teat Update

Today Wilmington Police announced the arrest of two individuals in the murder of accomplice Daryl Teat during the botched robbery of Ray's Deli on the Blvd. The two young men were identified as Reuben Stanford 19 and Dawune Boardley 19 of East 17th and 22nd st. respectively. According to the News Journal article, Dawune gave the orders to shoot the clerk and Reuben fired shots that instead struck and killed Daryl Teat.

I promised myself I would never get caught in these corny ass public space debates when it comes to graffiti and I still won't. But the Chester walls were different in that they broke up your drive. They always made you turn your head and look for something new. They were fun (or stressful) to talk about who was up or who got went over. That little stretch provided inspiration to a whole breed of new writers and burned images into the most impressionable of minds. I can see cleaning up those bridges to the north of the walls because they were getting junkier than a Kensington El dweller, but the walls? Nah. That was below the belt.

Thanks to one of my oldies for breaking me off with some of the earlier flics before he had to leave the country. He was one of my inspirations for not just taking photos, but purposely documenting. I thought of him today and was sure he would like to see these again. I wonder what school program they had to kill for the cost of cleaning that wall for no reason at all.

He started rapping when he was 14 making guest appearances on songs by Black Sheep and De La Soul. Glasgow High School more commonly referred to as G,G,G,G-High by it's students is located in Newark, DE. Students from the East Side, Glasgow, Brookside and Bear can be seen roaming the hallways during class times and smoking in the back parking lot. The following photos I stole from my sister during her time at Glasgow fighting at the dances and hanging with her homegirls. I love photographs like the ones below because they don't attempt to capture the moment, they live in the moment. Hope she doesn't get mad at me for sharing.

I have younger friends who also graduated from G-High in 2009, these photos are a 20 year span for them. Another young man was murdered before his 20th bday last night making him the 26th homicide of the year for the City of Wilmington. This ties the murder record set in 2008. It’s a damn shame when a person’slife is downgraded into nothing but a statistic.

My Facebook feed started going crazy last night around 830pm with news of Daryl’s death being broadcasted by younger Facebook connections. See I don’t know Daryl, but I found out as it happened because of the inner twined connections that all residents and former-residents of Wilmington share. Messages of “Rest In Peace” and promises of retaliation for a botched jux came across my computer screen. The pain, the hurt and the expressed love shared on his profile are all real with the obvious exception of some eager to make their association known for validity purposes. There’s nothing cool about this kid losing his life, nothing glamorous, nothing “gooned out” about it. Some of you need to grow up.

The county:
The reality is these incidents are not isolated to the confines of the city. A month ago I read posts on my news feed for another young subset of friends from Bear remembering their friend Kalil. 21 year old Kalil Ames was gunned down during an argument in Bear by a 17 year old friend. A couple of the posters revealed the identity of the shooter in hopes of finding him before the police a full 24 hours before the story appeared in the News Journal.

Daryl's last hour:
According to police, the incident unfolded about 8:50 p.m., when officers were called to Ray’s Deli in the 1200 block of Northeast Blvd. to investigate a robbery with shots fired. When officers arrived, the 31-year-old store clerk recounted what happened.

A preliminary investigation revealed that several suspects were in the store robbing the clerk. When the clerk went outside following the robbery, one of the robbers grabbed him and pulled him behind the business into a weeded area onto Thatcher Street. The assailant ordered the victim to give up his money or he would be shot, and another suspect rifled through his pockets and took whatever cash he had. At that point, the victim was able to break free and started running when gunshots rang out, Barnes said.

Detectives believe that one of the suspects was firing at the clerk but hit the 19-year-old robbery accomplice in the chest and leg. The remaining suspects then carried the dying victim to the 1200 block of N. Heald St. and left him on the steps of the church. A 17-year-old boy, stayed with Daryl as he lye dying after the rest of the group ran off. The gunshot victim was treated by New Castle County paramedics and rushed to Christiana Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The reality:
There is a perpetual cycle of violence that is pervasive among African-American communities that is not exclusive to inner city dwellers, but also working class families. Readers of news sites cheer on the loss of another black life by posting comments calling them “monkeys”, “one less to worry about” and “let’s give them more bullets to wipe themselves out.”

And my community continues to serve their will. You can live your life out as a statistic or as a man. Rest in peace little brothers.

Punk, Hardcore and Oi! have strong roots in Delaware with the scene exploding with talent known worldwide. Recently I was put onto a new band called Lifeless. This band isn't exactly a Delaware Hardcore band, but semi-qualifies with front man Jeremy taking vocal duty. The band officially formed in 2008 in New Jersey with Kyle and Jay on Guitar, Michael on Drums and Ryan on bass. Before joining Lifeless this past year, Jeremy assumed vocal duties for now defunct Delaware band Dead and Buried. When I heard the band for the first time, I thought, "Damn he sounds mad at something.." and I was right! They are mad. Mad about Hardcore.

First impressions. They are hard, loud and chug. I would put them in the same vein as Merauder, Sworn Enemy, maybe even a Cold As Life CTYC.

They currently are on www.harvcore.com records, which is the same record label that puts out new music from Delaware band DoubleDealer. I reviewed 10 tracks from Lifeless and found each one to be more aggressive than the next. Their songs command a certain level of energy from the crowd which I anticipate as they become more listened to they will receive. I woke up this morning in a rush to get my DJ equipment setup for a mid-day bbq/wedding reception that's supposed to pop off in less than an hour now. I'm expecting to see half of Germantown in my driveway ready to rock and have a little fun away from the hustle of Uptown. But in my crack of dawn daze I couldn't help but to recall the events I saw late last night while walking back down Main st. in Newark, DE.

A young local man was arrested after being accused of punching a University of Delaware student. I walked down the street and saw him and 3 friends run out of an alley while coming onto Main St. They were intercepted by 3 officers from Newark's street crimes unit (in case you're not familiar they wear these cool black shirts that give them unchecked power to harass, cuss in your face and ride around in unmarked minivans and cars..similar to Wilmington's jumpout squads). The officers shook two of the kids down, yelling in their faces calling them liars and they're going down..blah blah blah. You know the routine.

It took about 2 minutes of me asking some kids in the area what happened for me to find out that the two kids arrested had nothing to do with the UofDE student getting laid out. So why didn't the cops ask witnesses?

Here's the story, drunk college boy calls "townies" cocksuckers and arguing ensues. The collegiate who got aggressive gets hit once by a kid half his size and drops. He starts to get up and the same kid rocks him again, same results for the college boy. The cops pull up and the crowd of kids disperse, why?....because nobody trusts their judgement. Instead of asking independent groups of witnesses for accounts of what happened, the police instead turn to two drunk college girls who were with the guy that was knocked out and ask them to point out the assailant. They finger the wrong person, well duh. Then instead of asking the other kids who were with the accused the cops begin to walk up to the kids and start threatening them, "Get out of here before I bust your fucking head open" then walk away and laugh to their buddies about how they punked out kids half their size and a third their age. I guess if they took off their badges they would probably get knocked out too by those same little kids.

Two observations: The first is the lack of the investigative intelligence. Sure you can crack a graffiti crime or a burglary or whatever. But the NPD's abilities to piece together a puzzle on the spot is beyond poor. Most of the NPD's officers were born in the wrong era in the wrong country. I'd say the 1930s - 1940s in Germany is a more appropriate setting.

The second is you can't help but wonder how many kids in poorer environments experience this same type of shit every single day. Hopefully if our justice system works this kid last night will lawyer up, spank and embarrass those bullies in the courtroom, then get reimbursed for that insane display of idiocy on behalf of the NPD. With that said there are thousands of other kids who are not so fortunate to be able to lawyer up and defend themselves against false accusations. Who is our justice system setup to protect. Sad.

I personally know a couple of officers on the force that I've played on sports teams with, went to school with and even some that I've had some..well uh encounters with. These are good guys, guys who have families, recognize they have jobs and need to do them well. But then there's the other side of the force (and we all have these guys where we work) just plain dickheads. But you officers are public figures so we're going to publicly scrutinize you. Scott Simpson you're one of the good ones handling criminals and handling your job, if you're really here to protect and serve, just don't protect and serve your unit, protect and serve your city.

Markwizcalkani or whatever your fucking name is...get a life. If you're having problems getting hard, try Viagra.

Now watch them make up a charge on me for exposing their error last night. My ramble.

My Favorite Local Writers of the Moment List Pt. 2

This kid has without a doubt has brought a refreshing look to graffiti in this state. I know he's young and hopefully far from done evolving, but time will tell. For right now these few shots I pulled off of BS will have to do. In terms of his influences... if you know graffiti some of the letters are easy to see. He has good structure in his letters and has some heavy MSK and HM influences that are definitely good people to look up to. His hand is booty, but it's early in the game. Let's hope he doesn't burn out and keeps burning. One.

I don't think this will alter the rap game too much, but it does bring up a point that the use of Autotunes and focus on Ringtone sales has become played out. We all looked up to him. He was, without a doubt, our leader. It was a mutual feeling though, because in a way I think he looked up to us too. There was a constant give and take. But from early on I always realized that I was the only one that could see through it.

We weren't any type of organization or organized group. We definitely weren't a gang or any other crime related group. We were just a bunch of people trying to make it out. Well, I wouldn't say make it out… we were just trying to find our niche in this fucked up world. It was more of a reaction than an action.

Just like any other random cluster of people we had our spokesperson. It just felt like this guy knew everything. He knew when to fight and when to let things go. He always had an answer. We were the innocent and he was the experienced. We were the naïve and he was the jaded. We were the weak and he was the strong teaching us to be strong. We broke our backs for that wisdom. And we were breaking our backs to have that type of wisdom. We would have, without a doubt, went to war with this man.

I guess one day he got sick of the way things were and decided to just leave. He called us together and told us it was time to go. There was a unanimous decision to follow him. So they all left in search of something better.

I decided to stay because I was the only one that could see. They were blind to the fact that he was blind. They were not wise enough to put the pieces together. I had learned just enough to know. His house didn't have windows… he had no reason to ever look outside or look inside or look anywhere because it was all black.

The literal blind was leading the figurative blind.

I earned his respect because I stayed and I knew that he knew that I would succeed and he knew that I knew that he would succeed.

The rest of them went down faster than a cheap hooker.

Note from William Wallace to anyone reading: Change can only come from within. If you are unhappy with the way bombing is in Delaware, then you have to be a part of the change. For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction. Read that twice. As much as you would rather live in Philly or New York or wherever because "they're on that real shit"... guess what, you don't, and until you do, you have to be a part of this movement or you have to get off your message board and stop complaining. Pay attention to what is around you. Don't write this off yet. The Glam Life and Glory Days are on some real shit. And not just some real graff shit, some real shit period. If this was pure graff would I even have an audience? Fuck no. So generate interest, just because your boy isn't hittin a blackbook doesn't mean he can't be up on this. Photographers, writers, poets, musicians, anyone with a voice and a message should get involved somehow.

What I'm saying is... Stand up Delaware. Raise your hand. Be proud of where you are from. Read between the lines. Keep searching. Never stop pushing. Never stand still. Make moves. Know when to whisper and know when to yell. Stop hating. Be real. This isn't a movement. This is YOUR movement.

All that man ever did was read the paper.

For some reason we felt it necessary to insult him every time we walked through what we called Apprentice Park.

I don't know why we called him names. I guess we just thought he was the crazy old guy and it didn't bother him.

We walked down there about twice a week. In between or after our classes in the city. The park was at the end of Market Street and if you looked over the railing you saw 16th street right under you and across 16th was the Brandywine Creek.

One day I wandered down to Apprentice Park by myself and I saw the old man sitting on his usual bench reading the paper. I sat down next to him and I said, "listen, I just wanted to apologize for yelling at you all those times. It was stupid and immature, you deserve more respect than that. I'm sorry."

He looked at me and said, "you're apology doesn't hold its weight in water."

So I said back, "walk to the creek with me."

For some reason he did. He followed me down to the water's edge. I started walking into the water. Luckily for me, there was a spot ten feet deep just to my right. We were completely underwater now. We had become dense enough to stay at the bottom.

I said to him, "does it hold its weight in water now?"

He didn't say anything to me. He pulled out a lighter, set the paper on fire, and disappeared.

Reign Delay...*A Must Read

I could smell the wet asphalt before started raining. It was just that type of day. Every weather report called for storms. Every white cloud in the sky was slowly fading to black.

That was a misrepresentation of what was really happening. In our minds it was a beautiful day. Everything about our lives was slowly fading to white. It was one of the few times that I felt like every one of us was doing exactly what we wanted to do. We were all living a glamorous life. This was our glory day.

Obviously that wasn’t entirely true. Some people grow up with dreams of being an astronaut but one day they wake up and realize they couldn’t fly a kite in a windstorm. There are the talkers and the doers. Talkers tend have a mouthful of want and a handful of give me. This was the day I decided to be a doer.

We knew there was a rainstorm coming so we did what you do when it rains. We closed our car windows and made sure our sump pumps were working. The three of us operated in perfect time with one another. We lived our lives in key and in 4/4 time. When I got to my car I decided not to roll up the windows. I also decided not to go back inside. I started driving aimlessly, which was admittedly not what you normally do in the event of an oncoming storm. But I thought “fuck it, if I’m going to be a doer I’m not going to sit around on wasted talent.”

After driving for what felt like hours, I started to understand what people mean when they say that our roadsides have lost color. We live in a black and white pastel painting. Random color splashes the grey haze. After passing one of those few color splashes, another thought crossed my mind. I’m pretty sure I’m one of the few people who has ever thanked God for perverts, Pablo Escobar, and fallen heroes.

I kept driving until I didn’t care about the storm anymore. Then I realized it wasn’t storming.

It never started raining. But we kept living like it was going to. We kept preparing for it and it never came. It never does.

The cycle goes on and on and on and on.

And it never stops reigning.
